FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS

Below you’ll find answers to the commonly asked questions. If your question isn’t covered please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’ll be happy to have a chat!
  • How long is the waiting time for commissions?
As a general rule: the bigger the piece, the longer it will take. Depending on size and complexity, the lead time for finalizing a commission is 3 to 12 weeks (plus shipping time), unless otherwise indicated. As an example: an A4 sized black & white drawing will take approximately 3 weeks. I will make sure to always give you an estimate beforehand. The lead-time is subject to change depending on the time of year and on my commitments. This will be reflected on my website via the contact page. Christmas is always the busiest period, so don’t leave a commission until December – ideally, contact me by October. Remember, this is a highly detailed drawing done in a realistic style. It takes time and is well worth the wait as you will be receiving a unique, skillfully made piece of art to last a lifetime and beyond.
  • Do you take commissions from outside of the Netherlands?
Yes! As I work from photos, I can mail portraits out to just about anywhere. However, please keep in mind that the shipping costs will vary depending on your location.
  • I'm not sure which photo to choose - can you help?
Absolutely, send me as many photo options as you'd like, and we can talk about them. It often takes quite a while to sort out which photo I will work from, so please don’t worry about this – it’s all part of the job and I’m happy to advise. Selecting the right photo is really important to the final outcome, so it’s always worthwhile taking the time to get it right.
  • I only have hard copies and not digital photos - can you work from these?
It’s not always possible to work from a printed photograph, especially an old one. If your original is at least 10x15 cm and fairly close up, then I may be able to do so. You could either have a copy made and post it to me in a card-backed envelope, or send me a digital scan (the higher the resolution the better).
  • Can you make a composite portrait of two (or more) people or animals from different photos?
Yes, this is possible, but I don’t advise this, because the tones and lighting in each photo is likely to be very different (unless the photos were taken at the same time and in the same place) and so they are likely to look unnatural when placed together on a page. If you aren’t able to take a photo of the subjects together then I’d suggest getting separate smaller portraits instead.
  • Will I be able to see the portrait before you send it to me?
Absolutely! I always provide this opportunity. When I start to work on your commission, I try to send you as many updates throughout the process as necessary. When the commission is nearly finished, I’ll send you a final photo of it by text or email. You may give me suggestions for any amendments that you’d like. It’s valuable to have input from the person who knows the subject best – I don’t consider it to be finished until you are completely happy with it.
  • What are the prices based on?
The prices are based on a few different factors: - Portrait style chosen: painting or drawing - Number of people and/or pets - Close-up, mid-body, or full-body pose - Complexity of the project Besides the above, the hourly labour fee has also been calculated into the price, as well as a cost for the paper/canvas, some materials, and, when applicable, shipping and handling fees. This can vary depending on the chosen size and where the painting needs to be shipped.
  • What exactly is a mural?
A mural is any piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other large permanent surface. I can paint in a wide range of styles, from decorative intricate murals, to cartoon characters, as well as bespoke designed murals to suit your wishes.
  • How long does it take to paint a mural?
This depends on several factors, including the size of the wall area, the detail of the design, and the location of your home or mural. Most murals that only cover the wall partly take approximately 4 days to paint, while intricate mural designs that fully cover up the entire area will take 5-7 days. I always aim to book in a mural that will suit your timescale. It's also possible to do a project in several painting sessions.
  • What are the price ranges for murals based on?
Since it's difficult to pinpoint in advance how many hours a mural project will take, I've based my prices on the size of the wall (in m2) and the complexity of the design. I will of course communicate beforehand with you which price range your desired design fits into.
  • I am not sure what kind of artwork I want. Can you help me figure that out?
Yes of course! I usually begin by discussing your ideas with you over the phone or via email (free of charge), so I can understand what you are wanting to achieve with your mural painting and the type of room it will be painted in. I can then provide you with some design ideas and options for you to choose from.
  • How should the wall be prepared?
If it is an existing wall and the surface is in good condition, no special preparation is required. If the mural design requires a specific colour for the full background, the wall will need to be prepared and painted in the background colour before I arrive to start painting the mural. You may choose the colour yourself, or if needed for the specific project I will provide the paint colour reference for the specific background. If the wall already has a textured wallpaper: This shouldn't be an issue in case of a simpler design (e.g. when it has larger one-colour fields). If the design has a lot of fine details, the wallpaper needs to be removed because it is very difficult to paint fine detail on textured walls or brick. Once the wall is made smooth with a full coat of paint, the mural can be painted.
  • What type of paints do you use?
I mostly use acrylic paint from professional artist brands. These are safe, non toxic low odour paints which are durable, quick drying and safe for use in children's bedrooms.
  • What are the payment methods?
The easiest way to pay (if you are in the Netherlands) is by internet transfer/online banking (Ideal or Tikkie). I also accept cash if I deliver the commission to you in person. You can also pay by Paypal or credit card, though a processing fee will apply – more detail on this is available on the terms & conditions page.
  • When do I pay, and what are the guarantees?"
For commissions, a deposit of 50% is required before I start work on your portrait. When the portrait is nearly finished you will receive a digital scan of it by email, giving you the opportunity to let me know what you think and if there’s anything you’d like me to alter. Once you have decided you are completely happy with it, the other 50% of your payment is due. Once this is received and cleared I will send your portrait out to you. This way you only need to pay when you know exactly what you are getting!
  • What is your refund policy?
Head over to the terms & conditions page for all the information on refunds.
  • Can I pay in installments?
Yes, for any commission or original artworks priced above €250 this is no problem. We will set up a payment link for you and you can pay monthly until the balance has been paid. This way I make sure that my art stays available for anyone's budget.
  • Do portraits come framed?
I don’t offer framing as I prefer to concentrate on the portraits themselves, and also because shipping glass frames safely in the post is expensive and adds unecessary cost to the customer – it’s much cheaper for you to take your portrait to your local framing shop which can usually offer excellent advice on what type of frame will suit it. If you’ve ordered a standard size portrait (A6-A2), you will most likely be able to buy a ready-made frame for it in a general home deco store.
  • How is the artwork packaged and will mine be safe in the mail?
This is a very common and understandable concern amongst my customers! However I am very confident that my packaging is fairly indestructable. Portraits are first placed in cellophane sleeves (in the case of pencil drawings) which you can keep on right up until they go into their frames – this will protect them from dirt and grease from fingers. Then they will be put into a cardboard envelope so that they can’t be bent or creased in transit. Paintings on canvas are wrapped in bubble wrap and then placed in a cardboard packaging especially designed for delicate items like these to prevent any damaging.
  • Can I collect my portrait in person?
Yes, if you live in the Netherlands and want to do this then we can arrange for you to collect your portrait in person.
  • Will the portrait appear on the website?
I’m very grateful when customers allow me to display their portraits, however I understand that some people prefer not to. For portraits of people, I will always ask permission first – when you commission your portrait I’ll ask you to let me know if you’d rather that your portrait didn’t appear on the website or my social media platforms (I don’t have to display the name of the subject – sometimes people are happy for their portrait to appear but like to stay anonymous).
